Onsite Computer Support in North Haven : Emails not sending in Outlook 2010

One of my customers from the seaside location of North Haven contacted me saying his email had suddenly stopped sending in Outlook 2010. I checked his laptop and found quite a few “driver updater” and unnecessary “tuneup” applications that were slowing down his system. Although his laptop ran better with the malware removed, Outlook 2010 still reported errors when sending emails. Next I went into the advanced settings for his email account and checked his authentication and encryption settings which all looked fine so I had to dig deeper. I checked a few articles from Microsoft that referenced the error message he was seeing when sending and was able to locate some registry corruption (possibly from the malware listed above) which I then removed and rebuilt the registry. I then ran an Outlook 2010 application repair through the control panel and BAM he was back in action!

North Haven Onsite PC Support : Outlook 2010 errors when sending + backup drive setup

A customer from North Haven contacted me with a few issues in Outlook 2010 where it would receive emails fine but was holding all emails in the outbox when he went to send. I checked all of his settings and all of the IMAP, encryption and authentication settings were correct according to bigpond’s website so I dug a little deeper. After a bit more testing I suspected it might Outlook itself and I proceeded to run the application repair from the control panel. After a little while the process was complete and this got Outlook working again. I suspect that another program had upset Outlooks dependency on a system DLL or corrupted something in the registry as he was now back up and running. I also set up an automated easy to use backup system for him so that all of his photos and documents are being backed up daily to his external USB drive in case anything happens to the laptop. Another happy customer so I’m happy too 🙂

Wingfield Onsite Computer Support – Slow PC causing issues in MYOB

A furniture polishing company from Wingfield was recommended to me by another of my customers and called me up saying they were having some strange problems on their PC especially in MYOB. The PC wasn’t very old and was a pretty good spec for it’s day (i7 4790 / 8GB RAM / 250GB SSD) but was doing some odd things in programs such as not responding to some mouse clicks. I looked into the problem and found there were a few redundant “tuneup” programs on the PC which I’ve found generally make the PC run worse than better so I promptly removed these applications. I then found some mouse software and drivers that were intended to add some additional features but as the customer wasn’t using any of these I also removed them. After a good tuneup and removing the mouse software the PC was back up to it’s snappy self and was playing nice again in all of their work applications. I also noticed that the in built Windows System Restore function had become broken and as this is a very important lifeline for when things go wrong I undertook to fixing this also. Registry corruption was the problem here – most likely due to one of the tuneup programs – and once these errors were resolved System Restore was back in action.

Slow ACER laptop upgraded to high speed SSD

A nice lady contacted me saying the ACER laptop she had bought recently on special during the Christmas sales was running very slow and was performing a lot worse than she expected. She said it was heavily reduced and had a few concerns that the specs of the laptop were what was making it run so slowly. I had a good look at it and was able to tell her that the CPU was quite good, the RAM was decent but the 1TB Hard disk was a slow 5400rpm mechanical type and was undeniably the cause of the laptop being so slow to startup, shut down and general use in programs. I quoted her for a high speed SSD upgrade and told her that it would greatly improve the speed issues as the part that was holding the laptop back was this standard mechanical hard disk. She agreed to go ahead and after the hardware was installed and the cloning process was complete the bootup time from completely powered off until the desktop was loaded went from 2 and half minutes to under 15 seconds. Now that’s a decent upgrade right there! The overall performance of the laptop in all areas was much, much better and it turned a fairly slow underperforming laptop into a fast and reliable workhorse that you would normally pay over $1300+ retail for. All up for the laptop on sale + upgrade she paid under $1000 total so as you can imagine she was wrapped 🙂

Acer Windows XP PC from Glenelg running very slow with a virus on it

An elderly gentleman contacted me today saying his old Acer Windows XP PC was running very slow and he thought he might have a virus on it. Working on a Windows XP system took me back a bit as I barely see any PC’s with this Operating System installed anymore as they’re either just too slow to be usable or have simply died due to hardware failure. In his case, the PC was running a bit slow but overall was still working OK for what he needed it for so I gave it a good tuneup and removed a lot of applications and startup programs that were bogging down the PC’s performance. I then installed some antimalware programs to remove any viruses and junk he may have picked up from the internet and got it all cleaned up and back in action. I told him that while the PC is a bit old and slow, it’s still fine for basic use and he knows where to come if he ever does need to upgrade to a new PC 🙂
