Christies Beach Computer repairs and support : SSD upgrade for a slow office computer

Today I’m helping out a crash repairer in Christies Beach with one of their office PC’s not booting up to Windows. The manager told me that if you wait long enough it sometimes loads the desktop in Windows 10 after about 10 minutes of loading. I told him that my immediate suspicious were of a slow, old mechanical hard disk dragging the whole system down and said that an SSD upgrade would go a long way to the computers performance (or huge lack thereof). He agreed to go ahead with the upgrade so I took the PC back to my workshop in Hallett Cove and began by installing the new SSD and getting Windows 10 setup on the new drive.

It was very easy to see the chasm of performance difference once the SSD went in – especially now that the system booted up to the Windows 10 desktop in around 10 seconds. That’s a fairly decent performance upgrade from 10 minutes! All up, the didn’t lose any data, they have a system that’s super quick to use and didn’t lose any data at all.

Bellevue Heights computer repairs and support : VOIP phone issues after NBN install

Another one of my long time customers called and said he was connected up to the NBN a few days ago and while the internet side of things was working great, his voip phone wasn’t working at all. He had called his internet provider but unfortunately they weren’t much help and left him high and dry.

I logged into his new modem and immediately noticed his VOIP settings were incorrect and were missing his voip username and password. Without these the VOIP is dead in the water so we called back the support line for his internet service and requested the correct details. Once we had his username and password and these we’re put in place in his modem everything worked great and he was back in action.

Brighton Computer Repairs and Support : SSD upgrade for a four year old laptop

A nice lady from Brighton called this week saying her laptop was running really slow and was becoming very frustrating to use. I asked her how old it was and she guessed about 4 years so I immediately suggested upgrading her slow old 5400rpm standard mechanical hard disk to a high speed SSD. I explained to her that it’s a very painless experience as I clone the data from the old hard disk to the new one so essentially the PC or laptop looks and operates exactly the same – just a whole lot faster.

She agreed to go ahead and within 24 hours she had her laptop back on her desk now running at least 5 times and in some cases even 10 times faster! She was especially happy with the speed the laptop now booted up, how fast it now ran her programs and the fact that all her personal files and work was untouched and exactly as it was before. On top of that she gave her 4 year old laptop a new lease of life and didn’t need to fork out over a thousand dollars on a new one.

Blackwood Computer Repairs and Support : PC won’t browse the internet

I had another odd problem a customer in blackwood was experiencing where their email was sending and receiving OK but they couldn’t browse the internet using any browsers at all (Edge, Firefox, Chrome etc). Their PC could ping Google OK and their laptop connected over wireless browsed the net just fine but their PC wasn’t having any of it.

Long story short – after about half an hour of testing I nailed it down to their antivirus software. Somehow the software had gone a bit haywire (most likely as a result of the latest big Windows 10 update) and was blocking all outgoing HTTP and HTTPS traffic. A simple repair install of their antivirus software and they were back in business!

Seaford computer repairs and support : setting up PC for hosted login

I’m back at Seaford today helping a plumbing company set up a new PC for a recently hired staff member. All of their PC’s connect to an interstate hosted environment which makes things a little different to the normal local desktop setup most people use.

The big advantage of a hosted environment is that the PC or laptop you use doesn’t need to be fast as very little resources are used (often less than 5%) from the actual computer, the computer that’s doing all of the real work is a powerful server on the other side of the internet connection. Essentially it’s cloud computing and it will undoubtedly be the way of the future for a lot of businesses down the track.

Adelaide computer repairs and support : Email problems for a Cricket coach in Adelaide CBD

Another interesting one today in the heart of the Adelaide CBD. A customer of mine called saying he was having an odd issue with his email where all of the emails were coming in just fine but he was only able to send out a few emails each morning and then would get a message coming up in Outlook 2016 that said something along the lines of “Email rejected by Host / RCP quota error”.

I did a bit of research on-site and my first port of call was to check if I could log into his email account through the webmail address which seemed to work fine at first although the sending issue occurred even in his webmail for the same account. This confirmed to me that it was some sort of account issue which unfortunately he tried to resolve the day before but got nowhere after being on the phone to overseas support for over 3 hours. I had an idea which I thought might get him around the problem and would save us the heartache of having to call support again.

Basically what I did was set the authentication for his outgoing server to have the username and password of one of his work colleagues – this way his emails were still coming in as per normal as the incoming server was using his email address and password to collect the new emails and then when he sends out it uses the other details and got around the error. We had no luck finding the actual reason as to why his email account was blocking all outgoing emails after the first few and the hosting providers phone support didn’t seem to want to try very hard at all to help but he was happy with this clever work around and was able to get back to work. I suggested he look into changing to another hosting company with much better support for their products and services when his plan comes up for renewal.

Cherry Gardens computer repairs and support : Modem drop outs and a bad wireless signal

Today I’m helping out a customer in Cherry Gardens with some issues regarding their internet connection constantly dropping out and a very poor wireless signal in their home.

I investigated the availability of the NBN in their area and its scheduled to be available in about a month so rather than sell them a new ADSL modem that will be obsolete when the NBN arrives, I told them to get in touch with their internet service provider and order their NBN plan today.

That way they’ll get a new (XDSL) modem when the NBN is switched on and it should solve their problems. They were so impressed with my service that they decided to go ahead with an order for a new PC to replace their 6 year old and very slow desktop. Funnily enough, I supplied the old one they have all that time ago 🙂

Norwood laptop computer repairs and support : Malware on a hacked slow laptop

My adventures took me to Norwood today to help a girl with her laptop that she suspected had been hacked into and her passwords had been compromised. The first thing I checked was her anti-virus which had expired but didn’t give her any notice about it so I remedied that by installing a new antivirus for her.

Next up I checked the programs in the startup for her laptop as well as deleting any and all temp files for both her profile and for Windows 10 itself (viruses and malware love to hide in temp file locations). Next I checked her scheduled tasks as I’ve seen quite a lot of viruses hide in there so they can run at different intervals or even a minute or two after startup so you don’t notice them. She did have a few tasks that were very suspicious looking that referenced strange files located in folders inside the appdata area of her profile.

After seeing enough to warrant a good scan, I ran a malware removal tool which found over 800 infections. Needless to say once all the malware was gone and a good tuneup was done on her laptop, She was happy and things were running much better!

Seacombe Gardens computer repairs and support : Bad wireless signal fixed

A lady from Seacombe Gardens contacted me on the weekend saying she has a very poor wireless signal in the back rooms of her house after her new NBN modem was installed. Her son said Netflix and Youtube we’re completely awful to use and continually dropped out and come up with buffering messages all the time.

I took one look at her setup and told her that she was an ideal candidate for a powerline adapter + wireless access point upgrade.

She liked the sound of what this new technology can do and half an hour later the new network gear was installed and completely up and running with a brand new wireless access point in the bedroom area at the far end of the house.

Basically if the wireless signal from the original modem isn’t strong enough where you’re currently located in the house simply connect to the secondary wireless access point and BAM – perfect wireless reception. Good wireless signal throughout the house means everyone is happy 🙂
