Remote Support in Willunga

Remote support for a customer of mine at Willunga today setting up their office printer on a new laptop + sorting out some email issues then on the road again for some on-site support for another customer in the eastern suburbs getting her HP all in one PC back up and running. She called and said she had an issue that stopped her playing games and was coming up with an error along the lines of “DirectX 11 unhandled voilation”. Being a PC gamer myself I knew this sort of thing would be right up my alley and I had her sorted in no time. Her ATI Radeon drivers had become corrupted after a failed automatic update and were being automatically replaced with outdated and corrupted ones from the DLL cache every time a system restore took place. After doing a DLL + driver cleanup and re-installing the latest catalyst drivers it was game on! It’s funny to be able to say to a 65+ year old woman that I totally understand what she means when she says she likes to play a few games at the end of the day to mentally unwind and disconnect rather than sit like a zombie and watch TV shows 🙂

Another successful SSD upgrade

I upgraded this laptop yesterday for a customer who contacted me and said it was VERY slow starting up, shutting down and running any sort of applications at all. After some basic testing and a bit of research based on the age of the laptop, it was pretty easy to see that the standard 5400rpm 500gb hard disk was the main culprit for the tardiness. I planned to simply clone their old 500gb HDD to a new high speed 480GB SSD but it hit a few snags, namely massive hard disk corruption on the existing 500gb drive. After a few tricks and a 6 hour long CHKDSK run I was able to successfully clone their slow and dying hard disk to the new lightning fast SSD. And let me tell you, it certainly delivered. The laptop used to take around 4 minutes to boot up Windows 10 before you could log in – now it takes under 25 seconds. Shutdown was also several minutes and is now under 10 seconds. Programs and data that used to lag every time you clicked on them now appear on screen in mere seconds. What used to be a slow old and dying laptop now outperforms even many new laptops. Seriously, if you have an old PC or laptop that’s very slow – get an SSD installed. The difference is absolutely night and day and well worth every dollar on the upgrade.

Onsite Support King William Road

On-site support for another 10+ year customer of mine on King William Road then down south to a business at Morphett Vale to setup port forwarding from the router to the DVR so they can access their security system cameras remotely. Finishing off the day building a new website for another business customer… Big day 🙂

Tricky one today in Morphett Vale…

A customer in Morphett Vale called and said his PC was running very slow when he was on facebook. I checked the PC for malware and viruses and removed his outdated antivirus for a better one. The PC run better overall but the issue with facebook was still there. Whenever you visited the site, there was a delay in loading images or videos on the page and sometimes they wouldn’t even load at all. His modem was over 6 years old and was doing some strange things as well as very poor wireless coverage so I replaced it with a high range wireless N modem. Wireless coverage was much better and speedtest reported over 15mbit for his connection (versus the 9mbit he was getting on the old modem) but strangely the facebook delay was still there. I dug deeper and did a bit of research online and found out some information about SSL and HTTPS connections having issues while using Windows Vista. My customer had Windows Vista so this seemed to fit the bill. Long story short, the antivirus was doing a “web scan” of HTTPS connections which was basically never completing it’s scan and causing the delay and load failures. I don’t think HTTPS scanning is really required as it’s already an encrypted connection anyway etc. So, I selectively disabled only the optional HTTPS scanning and BAM – all issues resolved. The easy way out would be to say to my customer “Vista is old and you need a new PC” but I like to know why things do what they do rather than take the easy road. In the end, everything works fine on his PC and much faster too 🙂
