Broken off 3.5mm headphone jack plug end stuck in your laptop audio socket?

I had a laptop given to me this morning by a student at a school I do some contract support work for that had a 3.5mm heaphone jack snapped off and stuck in the headphone socket. I tried at first to see if I could dislodge it using a very small screw driver and some tweezers but it's virtually impossible as the more you try to move it, the more you seem to make it even more stuck in the socket. So off to google I went and found a few things to try for getting the broken off 3.5mm headphone socket out including toothpicks, straws and a biro pen inside tube. I went for the biro pen option as I had one handy and all it basically involved was removing the inner plastic tube from a normal cheap pen and then putting a small dab of gel based super glue on the end of it. Then you simply insert the plastic tube into the socket and it should fit snugly over the broken off headphone jack. Next, give it about an hour to set and then gently pull it out. I followed the steps to the letter and was honestly really surprised that it worked first time perfectly and easily removed the broken off headphone jack. A little tip though, go easy on the glue – the last thing you want is to glue the pen tube to the sides of the socket which will create a much bigger problem for you. Avoid the cheap watery runny super glue too, get the decent quality gel stuff so it doesn't go everywhere and you should be good to go 🙂

Warradale Onsite Computer Repairs and Support : Laptop dead after water damage / Hard disk recovery

A lady called me up from Warradale saying her laptop had suffered water damage as a result of a tall glass of water falling onto the keyboard and soaking the entire laptop. The laptop buzzed and fizzed for a while and then went off to the big sleep where all laptops go after they have a little swim. I had to break the news to her that the laptop motherboard was almost certainly dead as a result of the water damage but the good news was that the hard disk was very likely to be OK. I removed the hard disk, dried it off and tested it in an eternal enclosure and was able to recover all of her data to another external hard disk she supplied. She decided not to go ahead with repairing the laptop as it was already around 5 years old but was very happy that all of her personal data including photos, documents and her work from the old hard disk was able to be recovered.

South Plympton Onsite Computer Repairs and Support : Office 2016 install + Outlook IMAP setup

A business customer in South Plympton asked me whether they could have their email setup on three PC’s in their office with all of them syncronising when any changes are made. I told them “Absolutely!” and supplied them with Outlook 2016 to get them setup. As you may already know, there are plenty of free alternatives to Outlook out there such as Thunderbird but my customer was familiar with and liked the layout of Outlook so Outlook it was. After installing Outlook on all of their PC’s and getting all of the email accounts setup correctly using IMAP they were good to go with a fully syncronised email system for all of their users.

Brighton Onsite Computer Repairs and Support : Avast Antivirus blocking all internet

A long time customer from Brighton contacted me saying that after Avast and Windows 10 recently updated they were no longer able to access the internet. I checked the details of the latest Windows update from their update history and was able to confirm that it did indeed conflict with the latest version of Avast. Thankfully Avast had already developed a patch to combat the issue and after locating the correct file and applying it to Avast he was back in action. He also asked that I check his backup system while I was there so I updated the software to a more reliable and much smarter incremental backup system that would taker care of all of his data.
