Antivirus and Firewall programs are generally always a very good idea but when one of these programs goes a bit rouge and stops you from doing what you need to it can be very frustrating. One of my customers contacted me saying he suddenly couldn’t access the Internet after his antivirus updated and I immediately suspected that the firewall component has gone into some sort of lockdown. After a bit of a look at his laptop my suspicions were confirmed and I could see that his Avast Internet Security was blocking all incoming and outgoing network traffic. I tried resetting the application using it’s defaults and even turning off the firewall all together but had no luck getting him back online so I then simply uninstalled Avast all together, rebooted and then reinstalled. After setting up the basic settings for his security he was back online and could get back to work.
