A customer of mine in Morphett Vale contacted me today saying their front point of sale PC has crashed today and wasn’t booting up again. I took a look at the system and went straight to the BIOS to see if it was detecting the hard disk on at least a very basic level – unfortunately, it wasn’t. I then tried swapping the SATA plug from the hard disk to another socket but still no joy. As a last resort and to get a final verdict on the drive, I removed it and installed into into my portable USB external hard disk enclosure and tested it on their back PC. The USB enclosure itself detected but the hard disk wasn’t showing up in the disk management console so I had to break the news to my customer that unfortunately their hard disk had died. I also noticed that when the hard disk was starting up after the PC was turned on it was making some odd electronic noises that would repeat around 5 times – I suspect this was the control board sending the signal to the internals to start the spin up process and was failing. So basically my next step is to supply and install a new hard disk as well as Windows 10 and then my customer get their from the into their point of sale software…
