I spotted this new movie Annihilation on netflixlast week and it caught my eye that Natalie Portman starred in it which was a little surprising as it was a Netflix produced movie. I know there’s been a few big name actors transitioning to Netflix produced roles in series and movies lately such as Will Smith in BRIGHT (which I thought was pretty cliche’d and lame to be honest) so I was curious to see someone such as Natalie Portman who I generally had in mind associated with decent solid roles being cast in a Netflix movie. Well, without giving away any spoilers I can safely say she didn’t disappoint. The story in Annihilation is essentially a meteorite falls from space and lands near a lighthouse creating a “shimmer” or an area that is effected by the fallout of whatever the meteorite consists of.
The movie is intentionally quite ambiguous, dark and a lot of scenes are open ended and leave you with that unnerving fear of the unknown. If you like a movie thriller that plays with your mind, toys with your imagination and takes you on a pulse racing journey all at the same time then this is for you. I really liked it and thought there was very little to be picky about in it. The story was very abstract while believable, the sets and effects were awesome and the acting for the most part was solid and carried the creepy post apocalyptic vibe really well. I won’t ruin it by saying any more but if you like Natalie Portman, military area 51 style themes, post apocalyptic struggle and thought provoking psychological aspects to a movie then you’ll love it. My rating is 9 mutated shark toothed crocodiles out of 10.
