Seaford Computer Support : New Eco-system PC with SSD installed

I was down in the southern suburbs of Seaford today installing one of our Digital Insite Eco-system PC’s to dual 27″ LED screens while also setting up printers for a plumbing business so a new staff member is all ready to go for Monday.

I recently overhauled the specs of both our Eco-system and Powerhouse PC’s to include an SSD as standard and I can tell you that it makes an absolutely huge difference to performance vs a system with a standard mechanical drive. Less than 20 seconds from a completely powered off state to fully loaded showing the desktop and ready to use. I can’t state enough how much SSD technology has changed computers. Really cool tech 🙂

Dying hard disk recovery in a 7 year old HP pavilion PC

A customer of mine contacted me saying her husbands PC had crashed the night before and now won’t boot up and is coming up with pages and pages of “bad block” errors while trying to load up Windows 7.
The PC is a HP Pavilion i7 2600 series from around 6 years ago so I immediately had suspicions of extensive hard disk wear as I’ve been seeing a lot of PC’s and laptops lately around the 5 to 7 year old bracket have issues for the same reason. Basically, if a computer system has a single hard disk and is “thrashed” for years on end through regular large downloads from the internet or sustained pagefile usage (as a result of not enough RAM) it eventually starts to give way and critical errors will begin to occur in the read/write heads.
In a nut shell, this hard disk was dying… fast. I was able to get around the boot up issue and look at her data by using a unix boot disk and at least confirm that it was still there and then and begin the recovery process. The hard disk was in such bad shape that I found if I started to copy the data off to another external USB drive the original hard disk would heat up after about 15 minutes and then essentially turn itself off and become invisible to the system halting all data recovery.
I ended up having to create a script to copy data for 10 minutes, wait for 10 minutes to give the drive a chance to cool down and then run the data recovery for another 10 minutes. I left my custom script running for about 9 hours and after about 300 odd attempts at copying the data in the end I got back for her at least 95% of the data on the drive. She was absolutely stoked and ended up buying one of our new Powerhouse PC’s with an i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 240GB SSD + 1TB SSHD Hybrid hard disk. All up, her husband is back in business on a blisteringly fast new system and all of his important data back.

Aberfoyle Park, Clovelly Park, Lonsdale, Torrensville, Plympton Park then Hallett Cove… All in a days work :)

Another busy day that started out at Aberfoyle Park dropping off a laptop I repaired for a family from a school then down the Clovelly Park to help a business with getting their security camera system connected to the Internet so they can access and monitor their cameras after hours and anywhere in the world.

After that it was down to a catering business in Lonsdale to set up a brand new PC for them to replace their main laptop that had died and was controlling all of their their point of sale stock and sales synchronization between their sales terminals.

Next, I was on the road again to Plympton Park to help another customer with his wireless printer and some website issues and lastly Torrensville to deliver a laptop I had upgraded with a high speed SSD and then back to the workshop to build another PC. All in a days work 🙂

Time for an SSD upgrade…

I’m working on a laptop today down at Torrensville that’s probably around 4 to 5 years old that is EXCEPTIONALLY slow. The rest of the laptop is fine but the hard disk is dragging the whole computer down to a snails pace due to its age. An SSD upgrade to replace that old worn out hard disk would do wonders here.
If your task manager looks like this photo I just took then you also are an ideal candidate for an SSD upgrade.
I’ve done lots of these upgrades to both PC’s and laptops in the past and it turns an old, slow drag of a computer into a good, fast and reliable machine you’d be happy to use. You won’t lose any of your data or settings as everything is cloned to the new disk. In short, all your data and programs stay the same but everything runs MUCH faster!
Contact me if your computer is unbearably slow and I’ll help you get back up to speed 🙂

Another successful SSD upgrade

I upgraded this laptop yesterday for a customer who contacted me and said it was VERY slow starting up, shutting down and running any sort of applications at all. After some basic testing and a bit of research based on the age of the laptop, it was pretty easy to see that the standard 5400rpm 500gb hard disk was the main culprit for the tardiness. I planned to simply clone their old 500gb HDD to a new high speed 480GB SSD but it hit a few snags, namely massive hard disk corruption on the existing 500gb drive. After a few tricks and a 6 hour long CHKDSK run I was able to successfully clone their slow and dying hard disk to the new lightning fast SSD. And let me tell you, it certainly delivered. The laptop used to take around 4 minutes to boot up Windows 10 before you could log in – now it takes under 25 seconds. Shutdown was also several minutes and is now under 10 seconds. Programs and data that used to lag every time you clicked on them now appear on screen in mere seconds. What used to be a slow old and dying laptop now outperforms even many new laptops. Seriously, if you have an old PC or laptop that’s very slow – get an SSD installed. The difference is absolutely night and day and well worth every dollar on the upgrade.
