Seacliff Onsite Computer Support: Outlook 2010 issues after Windows 10 update

Today I’m down at the always picturesque Seacliff beach helping out a customer who is having some issues with Outlook 2010 after a large Windows 10 update came through. The update brought in some new features but at the same time seemed to break some of the dependencies that Outlook 2010 required to run properly. As the owner of the PC didn’t have their Office 2010 installation CD handy, I had to improvise and was able to get around the problem temporarily by creating a shortcut for Outlook 2010 that made it run in safe mode. This at least allowed us to get into his email, export out his contacts and collect his email settings so I could then set him up in Mozilla Thunderbird instead.
Personally I find Thunderbird to be a much better option for managing your email at home and for professionals unless of course you absolutely have to connect to a Microsoft exchange server for your email which in that case you have no choice but to use Outlook. In all other cases though, Thunderbird is fast, easy to use, reliable and best of all… completely free.

Seacliff Computer Support : Internet security and backup system setup

I was down at the very picturesque and always beautiful seacliff beach today helping a man who runs a CAD drafting business from home. He was having some issues with his internet security and antivirus that was blocking him from accessing certain functions of his internet banking as well as some general file management and backup issues on the PC. I quickly sorted out the internet security issues by adding an exception for the banking website in the antivirus software and also set up for him a much better file management and folder structure system for storing his documents and plans.
I then created an automated backup system that runs at 5pm each night and looks to see if his backup drive is plugged in – if it is then the backup will run and backup everything that has changed since the last backup – if his backup drive isn’t plugged in it simply skips the backup. I also made an easy desktop shortcut for him so that he can also manually run the backup to his external hard disk at any time. Simple, fast and smart at the same time and it gave him peace of mind that his data is always safely backed up.

Brighton Computer Repairs and Support : SSD upgrade for a four year old laptop

A nice lady from Brighton called this week saying her laptop was running really slow and was becoming very frustrating to use. I asked her how old it was and she guessed about 4 years so I immediately suggested upgrading her slow old 5400rpm standard mechanical hard disk to a high speed SSD. I explained to her that it’s a very painless experience as I clone the data from the old hard disk to the new one so essentially the PC or laptop looks and operates exactly the same – just a whole lot faster.

She agreed to go ahead and within 24 hours she had her laptop back on her desk now running at least 5 times and in some cases even 10 times faster! She was especially happy with the speed the laptop now booted up, how fast it now ran her programs and the fact that all her personal files and work was untouched and exactly as it was before. On top of that she gave her 4 year old laptop a new lease of life and didn’t need to fork out over a thousand dollars on a new one.
