Seaton Onsite Computer Support : Windows 10 Update 1709 causing freezing and boot loop

A customer from Seaton contacted me saying their ACER desktop PC keeps freezing up and is stuck in a boot up loop after a Windows 10 update keeps trying to install. Unfortunately, Windows 10 doesn’t give you any any option to stop it’s automatic updates and usually this is never a problem as the updates provide increased security and improve features and performance but in this case the updates were rendering the PC completely useless and unusable.

This is where I come in 🙂 My goal was to disable this offending Windows 10 update and revert their PC to the previous version of Windows 10 without the freezing and boot up problems. I dug in and ran a few hacks in the task scheduler that stopped Windows 10 from doing it’s automatic update checking then I proceeded to disable the Windows 10 update service. I noticed that there was still some update functions running so I downloaded a free tool called the Update Disabler which basically installs a service that handicaps and disables the Windows 10 automatic updates. You can still manually update but in this case for my customer I recommended them not to as it would only put them back to square one and ruin Windows 10 all over again. Once the automatic updates were completely disabled my customer was able to use their PC again as per normal.

In a nut shell, I don’t recommend you disable the Windows 10 updates unless you really need to as in this case. I generally find the updates don’t cause any major issues on newer PC’s and laptops (3 years old or newer), these odd issues seem to only happen on older Windows 7 era PC’s and laptops which was the case for the one I mentioned above. The updates do provide necessary security patches etc but if these patches are the things that are stopping you from using your PC then it’s obvious that they have to go.

STEEL RAIN (2017) Netflix

I just watched Steel Rain on Netflix a movie about government espionage and nuclear threat of war between North and South Korea. I thought the movie was really well made, the acting was really good and it had a believable and engaging story that kept me interested the whole way through while also giving a good view of how both sides of the divided nation of Korea live and operate on domestic and military levels. Highly recommended if you want to expand your cultural horizons while going along for the ride on a solid spy action movie. I give it 8 skinny noodles out of 10.

Lonsdale Onsite Computer Support : New Printer install + MYOB setup

A mechanic in Lonsdale contacted me asking for help setting up his new printer so that he could print from all of his devices in his workshop. In no time at all I had his two laptops, his upstairs accounts PC and his downstairs reception PC all setup and printing perfectly to the new wireless printer. He was also having some issues printing out statements from his internet backing as well as from MYOB which I was able to resolve by changing some antivirus settings and installing some free PDF software. Another happy customer back in business 🙂

Fulham Gardens Computer Support : Modem dropping out and failing PPP authentication

One of my customers from Fulham Gardens called me up saying he was having a problem with his internet connection dropping out over the past few weeks and has now been offline completely for the past few days.
I started by testing his modem which was getting line sync to the exchange but not going any further than that and failing at the PPP authentication every time. This modem was around 5 years old and was having issues with wireless connections and getting hot during the day so I immediately suspected the modem was a contributing factor to the problems.
We checked the PPP login and password was correct according to his records but no dice. Next up I installed a new modem and configured it with the PPP details but still no internet access… I called up his provider and requested a password reset and once the new modem was programmed with the new correct details and rebooted a few times he was back in business.
The new modem was a huge improvement over the old one and now provides full 5 bars of wireless signal all the way from his letterbox in his front yard right up to his shed in the backyard 🙂

Player Unknown Battlegrounds (PUBG) on Mobile

I just downloaded and gave Player Unknown Battlerounds for mobile a shot on my phone after hearing so much about it and seeing as its free on Google Play I thought what the hey.
I honestly didn’t expect much from it and my phone is certainly not designed for gaming (Galaxy A5 2017) but I have to say I was actually very impressed. I was running PUBG on medium quality settings and it generally looked and ran really well. A bit of graphical pop in here and there which is very much to be expected when running on a phone but nothing at all that was game breaking. The game itself was smooth, slick and everything worked as it should which was a welcome surprise.
I managed to take down 3 enemy players so I wasn’t a complete dead weight for my team and we took out the match in the end. All up, I was honestly surprised at how well it looks and plays.
Playing on a phone with touch screen controls is a little odd at first but after a few minutes I started to get the hang of it and was driving, running, swimming and picking up loot all over the place. This is the real deal PUBG with 100 online players all trying to get to last man (or team) standing and is a great way to experience what everyone is talking about with the convenience of playing on the go. I fully expect this to go absolutely bonkers massive as far as popularity.
