Glenelg Onsite Computer Support : New modem install in Beauty Salon

A beauty salon in Glenelg called me up saying they have been having ongoing problems with their internet connection dropping out at work. As they heavily rely on their internet connection for online bookings etc it was absolutely imperative that the connection issues be resolved so dug right in and began by testing their modem. After a few failed tests I concluded that the modem had somehow become faulty (possibly due to a power fault) and I replaced it for a new one. After a little bit of configuration, they were very happy to be back online again and back in business 🙂

Glen Osmond Onsite Computer Support : Outlook emai problems and printer setup

Today I am out in Glen Osmond helping out a customer that is having some email problems with Outlook on his HP laptop as well as setting up a new wireless printer connection for him. After a few tweaks to the IMAP settings and the correct encryption settings programmed into the printer he was good to go 🙂

Clovelly Park Onsite Computer Support : New NBN modem setup with 3G / 4G backup support + CCTV remote access

A business in Clovelly Park contacted me saying they needed some help setting up a new modem for the NBN that provides a 3G / 4G backup connection should the XDSL NBNconnection ever drop out. They had been having the occasional drop out on the NBN connection over the past few weeks and needed to have a rock solid way of getting around it when this happens. I got the new modem all setup on the NBN as well as their 3G / 4G mobile backup connection working seamlessly when the XDSLline gets dropped. I also setup port forwarding etc for them so they can monitor their CCTV security camera feeds remotely when they’re not in the shop.

Annihilation – Natalie Portman (2018) Netflix [ spoiler free ]

I spotted this new movie Annihilation on netflixlast week and it caught my eye that Natalie Portman starred in it which was a little surprising as it was a Netflix produced movie. I know there’s been a few big name actors transitioning to Netflix produced roles in series and movies lately such as Will Smith in BRIGHT (which I thought was pretty cliche’d and lame to be honest) so I was curious to see someone such as Natalie Portman who I generally had in mind associated with decent solid roles being cast in a Netflix movie. Well, without giving away any spoilers I can safely say she didn’t disappoint. The story in Annihilation is essentially a meteorite falls from space and lands near a lighthouse creating a “shimmer” or an area that is effected by the fallout of whatever the meteorite consists of.
The movie is intentionally quite ambiguous, dark and a lot of scenes are open ended and leave you with that unnerving fear of the unknown. If you like a movie thriller that plays with your mind, toys with your imagination and takes you on a pulse racing journey all at the same time then this is for you. I really liked it and thought there was very little to be picky about in it. The story was very abstract while believable, the sets and effects were awesome and the acting for the most part was solid and carried the creepy post apocalyptic vibe really well. I won’t ruin it by saying any more but if you like Natalie Portman, military area 51 style themes, post apocalyptic struggle and thought provoking psychological aspects to a movie then you’ll love it. My rating is 9 mutated shark toothed crocodiles out of 10.

Lonsdale Onsite Computer Support : Wireless connection to iPad and Desktop failing on ADSL modem

One of my long time 15 years+ customers from Lonsdale emailed me saying that the wireless connection on their modem was having problems connecting to their desktop PC as well as the 4 iPad’s they own. They had spent lengthy periods of time speaking to the phone support from their internet provider but didn’t get a resolution.

I started off by connecting a long Ethernet cable to their modem and logging in to the modem config page in their browser. I noticed that their wireless network settings were set to the factory default WPA settings which is now considered a security risk as WPA can now be hacked using freely available tools. I changed their wireless network name, wireless password and encryption settings to WPA2 with AES/TKIP to bring them up to date with the current recommended security profiles.
Npw that the wireless side of things was sorted on their modem next up it was simply a case of connecting all of their wireless devices to the new network name and testing the connection quality. After a few runs on YouTube and Speedtest.net I was happy to say that they were back up and running better than ever 🙂
