Stonyfell onsite computer support : Slow ADSL and Outlook 2010 problems

I’m out in the eastern suburbs today helping a nice lady from Stonyfell with her laptop and iphone. The laptop was running very slow and was reporting around 0.5mb/s for download speed in speedtest.net and was badly effecting Outlook 2010 being able to send and recieve emails. After a whole lot of unneeded apps were removed, the startup was tuned and her laptop power plan was set to maximum performance when plugged in – she was getting around 4mb/s for download speed which got her emails back up and running properly in Outlook.
I also mentioned to her that an SSD upgrade for the laptop would go a long way to improving the overall speed of her system and it gave her something to consider if she wants to get the most out of this unit vs purchasing a brand new laptop. Another happy customer who can get back to what she does best 🙂

Seacliff Onsite Computer Support: Outlook 2010 issues after Windows 10 update

Today I’m down at the always picturesque Seacliff beach helping out a customer who is having some issues with Outlook 2010 after a large Windows 10 update came through. The update brought in some new features but at the same time seemed to break some of the dependencies that Outlook 2010 required to run properly. As the owner of the PC didn’t have their Office 2010 installation CD handy, I had to improvise and was able to get around the problem temporarily by creating a shortcut for Outlook 2010 that made it run in safe mode. This at least allowed us to get into his email, export out his contacts and collect his email settings so I could then set him up in Mozilla Thunderbird instead.
Personally I find Thunderbird to be a much better option for managing your email at home and for professionals unless of course you absolutely have to connect to a Microsoft exchange server for your email which in that case you have no choice but to use Outlook. In all other cases though, Thunderbird is fast, easy to use, reliable and best of all… completely free.

Aberfoyle Park School onsite computer support

Some problematic wireless access points are the focus of the day today at a school in AberfoylePark. All of the students aren’t here today so it’s an ideal time to check on the roof mounted access points to make sure they are all working and giving out a good signal throughout the whole campus. A few of the access points were showing up in the wireless settings on devices but weren’t allowing staff and students to connect to the internet and local network resources. My first port of call for any access points in question is to remove them from the roof and attempt to power cycle them in the hopes that the old “reboot trick” we all know and love so much on our PC’s and laptops works here too. In most cases today, that was all that was required to fix the problem!

Adelaide City Supermarket Onsite Computer Support

Today I’m in the heart of the city helping out a fine foods supermarket with some email and internet issues as well as getting their CCTV recording system up and running on the owners iphone so he can monitor what’s happening in his business when he’s not in the store. After correcting a few issues with their email to do with SSL and authentication, they were back up and running and the backlog of emails being held in their their Outlook outbox disappeared. Next up was the CCTV app on the owners iphone which was pointing at an incorrect public IP address. I helped them by showing them how to discover their public address and put it in the app on his phone and also mentioned that a dynamic DNS solution would be ideal if they continue to have any issues down the track. Another happy customer and now on to my next one…
