Flagstaff Hill Onsite Computer Support : New Computer installed

One of my long time customers called up last week and said their PC was running very slow and that they had lost a whole lot of emails that were previously stored in folders in their inbox and sent box. I suspected hard disk failure and after running a few tools that interrogate the hard disk I was able to show them that the hard disk was very much on it’s last legs.
They decided to go ahead with a new PC rather than spend money on repairing a 6 year old system so I supplied and installed their new Digital Insite ECO-system PC today [ Core i3 7100 / 8GB RAM / 240GB SSD / Windows 10 ] and transferred all of their data across including their photos, desktop items, documents, videos and was able to get their email all back up and running including all of the folders they thought they had lost forever. Another happy customer 🙂

Hallett Cove Onsite Computer Support : Slow laptop after Windows 10 update

A customer in Hallett Cove contacted me today saying his laptop was very slow and behaving strangely after a large windows 10 update had gone through. He said it took quite a long time for the update to complete and when it rebooted he wasn’t able to log in as per normal.
I found that his laptop has got stuck in a type of hibernation loop where it had gone to sleep after the update (possibly due to low battery) and wasn’t waking up properly to allow him to log in. I pulled out the battery from his laptop for 1 minute and then tried to boot up again with the battery in and was able to trigger the Windows repair menu. After a few more steps repairing his Windows startup and getting the update in question to successfully complete this time – he was back up and running.

Clovelly Park Onsite Computer Support : Bitcoin miner virus on laptop

Today I had an interesting one. One of my business customers called me up saying she was seeing a strange file called “photo.scr” coming up on the screen when she was trying to access the web view of her CCTV security camera feed. I did a bit of research and found that this “photo.scr” file is actually the monero bitcoin miner virus that tries to infect your system and use your system resources (cpu and gpu etc) to run encryption tests and generate bitcoin currency for the makers of the virus.
Very clever and sneaky but also very frustrating when your PC or laptop is running very slow because of the virus gobbling up your computer’s processing power. After some further research into how the virus works and what specific parts of the system it infects, I used some of my trusty malware removal tools to get rid of the infection then patched the vulnerabilities in the system that allowed the virus to get there in the first place and they were good to go and back in business.

Flagstaff Hill Computer Repair and Support : Old PC with slow dying hard disk

Today I am up in the hills of Flagstaff helping out a long time customer of mine that bought a PC from me around 7 years ago. The PC is still running but they noticed that it’s been very slow to start up and run programs of late and has been getting worse on a weekly basis. I did some testing and was able to show the SMART status of the hard disk as very worn out (health rating of 5%) and expected to die any time soon. I explained to them that around 7 years of sustained use on a 7200rpm mechanical hard disk is actually not too bad as far as expected lifespans for a hard disk. I then gave them options to clone their data exactly as it is to a new technology high speed SSD or to simply replace their tower with one of my Digital InsiteECO-system Windows 10 towers. They went ahead with the new system and will be getting it installed in the next few days and will be back in action faster than ever.

Morphett Vale Onsite Computer Support : Networking Windows XP and Windows 10

A business at Morphett Vale called today saying they were having some issues with the computers in their store not connecting to each other after a large Windows 10 update downloaded and installed last night. I’ve found that Windows 10 usually networks quite well with Windows 7, 8 and other Windows 10 installations but can often hit a few snags with XP and older version of Windows due to the SMB functions being upgraded in the newer versions of windows. Long story short, I was able to tweak the Windows 10 PC at the front of their store to allow connections that the XP PC in the back office was trying to connect as and BAM – eveything is back up and running. On to the next job 🙂
