Today I had an interesting one. One of my customers called me up saying she was seeing a strange file called “photo.scr” coming up on the screen when she was trying to access the web view of her CCTV security camera feed. I did a bit of research and found that this “photo.scr” file is actually the monero miner virus that tries to infect your system and use your system resources (cpu and gpu etc) to run encryption tests and generate bitcoin currency for the makers of the virus.
Very clever and sneaky but also very frustrating when your or is running very because of the virus gobbling up your computer’s processing power. After some further research into how the virus works and what specific parts of the system it infects, I used some of my trusty malware removal tools to get rid of the infection then patched the vulnerabilities in the system that allowed the virus to get there in the first place and they were good to go and back in business.
